Peter Birren is an
award-winning graphic designer who has owned his own studio
since 1975. His interest in astronomy began at an early age,
thanks to the influence of a loving and curious father. He
regularly travels 100 miles to get out from under Chicago's
light dome with an antique 6-inch reflector, tripod-mounted
binoculars and adjustable viewing seat.
An active hang glider pilot
since 1977, Peter has logged nearly 1000 flights, performed
in numerous air shows and invented a device for the sport
used by NASA on the X-38 Space Station Lifeboat.

The
Complete Mag-10 Northern Deep-Sky Viewing List and Field
Book
|
Description:
Objects in the Heavens is a pocket-size astronomy field guide
that features all known
deep-sky objects to Magnitude 10 for telescope and
binocular observation. All types of galaxies, clusters and
nebulae were painstakingly culled from every available
catalog, organized and cross-referenced for ease of use at
the viewing site. Object-oriented maps include special
symbols to aid in identifying objects, stars, double stars,
and asterisms. Simple enough for the beginner. Detailed for
the advanced observer.
The digest-sized, spiral bound Third Edition
of Objects in the Heavens features 680
northern hemisphere deep-sky objects, all with Y2K or better Hyparcos data. Those objects of magnitude 7 and brighter -
''city'' objects - are highlighted in the lists and in the
63 maps.
Astronomical details are in ''expanded shorthand''
and set large for reading by flashlight. Newly included are
144 double/multiple stars and several brief constellation
grouping stories which present the bigger picture. These
stories have proven helpful teaching the sky to kids of all
ages.
This multi-purpose guide is most convenient at the
viewing site instead of carrying larger, bulkier books and
computers, or as a companion to the larger sky atlases when
planning a night's viewing. It's compact size makes it ideal
for camping, hiking or in the car.

I feel this is a very useful
publication and have no hesitation in recommending it to Webb
Society members, particularly those who are just starting out in
deep sky observing and/or have small telescopes or binoculars. I
would certainly have appreciated this little book when I was
starting out in deep sky observing.
-Faith Jordan, The Webb Society
''I really like the book!! I've used
a few ''observing lists'' in the past, but this book has a much
larger selection. I intend to show the book to my Beginning
Astronomy students and let them know I think it is a great value,''
-Steve Barkes, astronomy professor |
